FKG USK team carried out a social activity for children from the Gampong Jawa Banda Aceh community. This activity was led by drg. Yuli Fatzia Ossa, Sp. PM (Oral Disease Specialist) along with members drg. Maida Fitri Sp. KG and drg. Maulidia Indah Sari Sp. KG (Dental Conservation Specialists). This activity was carried out in an effort to raise awareness of oral health among children in the reading park community.
This social service activity was carried out in two visits. The initial visit was on June 14th.During the initial visit, counseling/education was provided to children about oral health and also education on how to maintain hand hygiene. During the first visit, the children were also taught how to brush their teeth through a demonstration conducted by the team of dentists from FKG USK. During the initial visit, the children were also taught to brush their teeth in the morning and at night for 21 days and to record this in the health report cards that had been distributed.
“This toothbrushing habit is being instilled so that the children become accustomed to brushing their teeth in the morning and at night, thereby improving their oral health,” said the head of the research team (Dr. Yuli Fatzia Ossa, Sp. PM).
On July 9, 2023, the community service team made a second visit to the children’s educational park community in Gampong Jawa, Banda Aceh. On this occasion, the USK FKG lecturer team conducted oral cavity examinations on the children.
“During this second visit, we conducted oral cavity health examinations on the children, performed initial screenings for cavities, and assessed the health of the oral cavity mucosa,” said the head of the community service team. Additionally, during the second visit, the community service team evaluated the toothbrushing techniques taught during the initial visit by checking the report books distributed during the first visit.
This initial screening aims to assess the condition of the children’s oral cavity, so that they can be educated to visit a dentist if they have any complaints or issues with their oral cavity.
This community service activity was carried out with the assistance of a grant from the Research and Community Service Institute (LP2M) of Syiah Kuala University. (Contributor: YFO)
