The growth of the materials used closely correlates with the expansion of dentistry knowledge and practices. The dental material department of the Dentistry Faculty of Universitas SyiahKuala plays a significant role as the core of dentistry’s growth. Dental material science encompasses more than just restorative materials, auxiliary dental materials, or representative materials from the diverse classes of materials, such as metals, polymers, ceramics, and composites. However, dental material science also delves deeper into the materials utilized in the human biological system, encompassing their interactions with the host system, biological testing of biomaterials, tissue engineering, implant materials, and the development and regulation of medical products utilizing biomaterials. Consequently, the Dentistry Faculty at UniversitasSyiah Kuala’s section on dental materials is in charge of these areas. It includes a wide range of research areas, such as nanomaterials, synthetic and organic polymer, ceramic and composite materials, implant materials, tissue engineering, medical and dental devices, and the creation of new dental materials from natural environments (biodiversity). The overall educational goal is to expose students to knowledge of materials in dentistry, biology, basic dental medicine, clinical materials and medicine, and engineering science, enabling them to solve interdisciplinary issues in dental material through the integration of novel technology. After graduating from the dentistry faculty, we expect students to possess practical knowledge in dentistry, biology, dental medicine, and engineering, and to utilize these disciplines to tackle dental problems.
